I came across this “Stain Station” which was on Better Homes and Gardens and thought it was a great idea. In this story, it was pitched as a tool box of sorts for the laundry, but it can be slightly tweaked to be utilised for the whole house. For example, I’d add furniture oils and essential oils for my woodwork in the house to this tool box. I add orange blossom oil to my furniture oil and it just makes the house smell like a happy sunny day, and I kid you not, it takes all of about 2 minutes to wipe down the dining table or bedside tables. The bonus is that it’s killing 3 birds with the one stone (yes, 3!!!) – I’m cleaning, nourishing and fragrance-ising (!) my furniture. Ok, that may seem like just a little thing, but I love the outcome so much, that I NEVER miss doing it on weekly cleaning days as and a result, my house is always smelling lovely, which in turn makes me smile.
So, by putting together this ‘tool box’ it makes an easy go-to, portable, practical thing to have for your home – carry it from room to room and it has everything you need! And guess what! Because I live in a 2 storey house, I have one tool box for each floor – that way, it is ALWAYS within reach and so easy to access and use, that I rarely procrastinate on quickly wiping things over (which is a big breakthrough for someone who is a 3rd generation procrastinator!!).
It also then got me thinking about decluttering in more general terms (as my brain often does!). Namely, that the more stuff you have, the more stuff you have to maintain, store, process every/day/week/month/year. By having a regular cupboard ‘detox’ you’re actually cutting down on the stuff you have to babysit. You have to ensure it doesn’t get detroyed by dust, mould, moths etc.
ANyway – food for thought! Hope you like this idea and give it a go!
