I read a book called “Outliers” which looked at why certain people or groups of people are successful. One of the theories that people became expert at certain things was because they had spent at least 10,000 hours doing it. This translates to working 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year by 5 years.
I have studied designers, read blogs, subscribed to newsletters and attended workshops and trade shows obsessively for nearly 7 years. In addition, I have been building up my experience through my own business in over 5 years now. Also, in that time:
* I have had 2 children,
* my husband retired from an industry he’d spent 30+ years in to start a new business
* faced some financially challenging times,
* my mother had a devastating stroke,
* we sold and moved home, just to mention a few
So, despite some major life events in just a few short years, my work has been my escape and one of the things that drives me forward. I love helping people achieve the beautiful home they dream about. Along the way, that has lead me to helping people declutter. The biggest reward is seeing people transform from crying (literally) because they’re so embarrassed by their clutter to glowing from the triumph of letting go of their stuff!
As Henry Ford once said, whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right!!!
So, have I gone above and beyond? It’s hard to tell. I have worked hard and not given up despite some very challenging times. And while I feel there is a long long way to go, I’m still excited by the itinerary and best of all is when you have that happy client at the end!!
